In the dense forests of Mithila, lived a hermit named Mandavya, and his wife, who had both renounced worldly life to pursue spiritual austerities. They lived a simple, secluded existence, their only companions the creatures of the forest. Their devotion to their practice was so profound that they had not seen the light of the sun for many years, living in a deep hermitage sheltered by thick foliage.
Their son, Sama, was born and raised in this secluded hermitage. He knew nothing of the outside world, his life dedicated to serving his ascetic parents. Sama was an exceptionally devoted son. Every morning, he would fetch water from the river, gather fruits and roots for their meals, and tend to their needs with unwavering care. He was their eyes and their hands, as they had become blind due to their prolonged seclusion.
One day, while Sama was at the river fetching water, King Piliyakara of Mithila, a keen hunter, was traversing the forest. He was known for his skill with the bow and arrow and his insatiable desire for sport. Unaware of the hermitage and its inhabitants, the king spotted Sama by the riverbank, mistaking him for a wild animal due to his simple attire and solitary presence.
In a moment of misguided impulse, the king drew his bow and shot an arrow at Sama. The arrow struck Sama in the side, and he collapsed, crying out in pain. The king, realizing he had harmed a human, rushed to his side. Sama, in his dying breaths, explained who he was and the plight of his blind parents who depended solely on him.
Filled with remorse, King Piliyakara went to the hermitage to confess his deed. He found the hermit and his wife distraught, having sensed their son's absence and the tragic event. The king, with a heavy heart, explained what had happened. The hermit and his wife were devastated, their world shattered by the loss of their only support.
As the hermit and his wife wept, a divine presence descended. It was the god Indra, who, witnessing the injustice and the profound suffering, decided to intervene. Indra, using his divine powers, brought Sama back to life. Sama was instantly healed, as if nothing had happened.
Indra then addressed the king, the hermit, and his wife. He revealed that Sama's life was spared due to his immense filial piety and the purity of his heart. He then granted the hermit and his wife their sight back, so they could see their beloved son once more. The king, deeply humbled and repentant, vowed to protect the hermitage and its inhabitants, dedicating himself to acts of righteousness and compassion.
Sama continued to live with his parents, serving them faithfully. The king, true to his word, ensured their safety and well-being. The story of Sama became a legend, a testament to the power of filial devotion and the consequences of thoughtless actions. It served as a reminder that even in the pursuit of one's desires, compassion and awareness of others are paramount.
